Passivity-Based Analysis and Performance Enhancement of a Vector Controlled VSC Connected to a Weak AC Grid

Despite attempts to increase the active power capability of vector-controlled voltage source converters (VSCs) connected very weak grids, interaction between control dynamics and physical system is not completely understood. The result often complex strategies that are difficult implement. This paper proposes an intuitive modification VSC based on considerations existing control. Several variables as seen from point common coupling (PCC) found contribute detrimental behavior under connections. Hence, eliminating impacts these through feedforward eliminates their influence significantly improves capability. Notably, basic structure vector controlled kept its output-impedance effectively reshaped. proposed validated nonlinear time-domain simulations in MATLAB/Simulink Simscape Power System results demonstrate simplicity intuitiveness modified structure.
